New video-centric theme development.

(6 posts)
  1. Ok some of you may know that i'm making a new video theme for wordpress somewhat based on the design at kmogvideo.net . Well if you're interested in possibly using this theme when it's done, or you're just really cool and would like to make it as good as it can be here's the place to suggest design you like, features you'd like, all that kind of stuff, links to other site's that are doing it right it's all good!

Right now i'm thinking a 1000px wide, two sidebars, featured content slider and a image neutral/pastel colours.

Do you want a fully designed site where there's strong imagery where you'd just change the site's title, or would you rather something more basic that's a near blank canvas for you to build upon?

also if you want to really elaborate back and forth add me on skype- kmogvideo or aim- krystianmorgan

hopefully the third time is the charm trying to post this thread.

  2. If you go down to 990px wide, there will be no sideways scroll for users with screen resolution set to 1024x768 using IE. If you care about that sort of thing.

I'd be up for going back & forth on Skype during spring break - I have some free time during 3/16 to 3/18.

I'd like to see a near-blank canvas to build upon, but that's well thought out for how people could customize it.

For example: I've just spent a bunch of time teaching my web design class about CSS by having them edit the CSS for their Ning profile. Ning's layouts are pretty slick in this regard. Most have anywhere from 1-3 background images users can replace via interface. Any others have to be hunted down with Firebug and hosted elsewhere, or uploaded to Ning in a discussion thread and then the image link would have to be harvested from there.

Anyway, the gist is, all their header background images are 955px wide, set to no-repeat. Most profile pages have a background image for the body element that's set to repeat-x. Some also have a main-content background image set to repeat-y. Maybe a similar set-up and some documentation included with the theme would give enough customization options, but strike a balance where you're not trying to allow each user to completely alter the entire layout.

    Featured content slider sounds awesome!

I'm still looking for a theme whose index page is set to use 3 loops. One to prominently feature the latest video from a "featured" category - this is where I'd include the featured content slider. But I'd like another loop to include the latest video (or maybe latest 3) from a category of less important videos, like the random, daily-life ones. Videos that I want people to know are around, but that I don't want knocking my latest "featured" video out of center stage. I'd like a third loop that pulls up the latest 1-3 posts from another category - one for text and photo posts (posts that do not contain video).

I'm still wanting a layout that breaks the boxy, bloggy look as well. But that's hard to fit into WordPress' standard output of a main content area, a side bar, header and footer. And everyone would want to do it differently.

These are just ideas for a personal vlog. I don't know if they'd suit every vlogger or your purposes. But I'm throwing them out there for contemplation.

    Oh, and there's more!

I really dig the video presentation over at Photobus http://www.photobus.co.uk/

Hover over the video, you get its controls. Take the mouse away, you’re looking at a picture, only it has a play button to indicate you can play it. The video space looks custom skinned in a way, at least with the video player having its own drop shadow. I’m pretty sure this is accomplished via the JW FLV Media Player – the new 4.3 version has features I want and will let users skin & control the appearance of the player – but I still need to learn how (frown). When played through to the end, the video doesn't sit on a black frame, it returns to the poster image for the video. I want that.

I'm excited to see what you come up with!

.....it's also similar in layout to something else I am working here

  4. Hello,

@Cheryl i really like your ideas on the 3 sections dedicated to the homepage, particularly the idea of having 1 blog that handles both video pages and written pages as i too would like to write posts with some maybe lesser videos i've done that i don't want to be downloaded by my itunes subscribers etc.... Also the idea of breaking out of that 'blog' look, i'm now thinking of ditching the sidebars for all the pages except for the written (blog) pages, but have all the stuff we would usually want in the sidebar cleverly fitted into the homepages i.e archives, categories feed buttons etc...

I'll mock up a design soon to give you a visual representation of what i have in my head, because i don't think it'll come through in writing.

That photobus site has the same video set-up as on my site, the only exceptions are i wanted my videos to auto-play thinking if someone comes onto my index page and clicks to watch a video, the minimal amount of clicks to do so the more likely they are to click to view more. Also the image in the player is there by default, i took it out for personal preference because i already had the still frame in view from the text part of the post. The shadow behind the player is just a matter of sticking a jpg in the div that houses the jw player, so nothing really complicated to overcome there.

You can create whatever player you want here and simply update the default code i do with little variables on the end: http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player-setup-wizard

@Heath,I like that flickout site, looks alot like David Howell's, but i want to try and do something a bit different, hope it turns out good, as i'd love for people to end up using it. Yeah i'm in the uk at the moment, so add me to skype whenever you want i'm usually online.

  5. HOW did I not know about your setup wizard!? I'm looking forward to trying it out!

I think you're right about just killing off the sidebars for the main page. In my case, I was planning on leaving them in, but manipulating the layout with CSS so they don't *look* like sidebars. For one, they'd be below the main content where the featured video slider is. I also want them to look much less boxy, an organic looking layout. I feel like I can achieve it if I can just get some really focused time to devote. If I make a mockup image, I'll post it here.

I'm definitely excited to see your mockup, Krystian. And thanks for the advice on setting up a background for the player. I hadn't thought of just attaching it to the containing <div> ... duhhh.

My skype username is "hummingcrow" so add me to your friends list & I'll look for you next time I have the opportunity!
