Well, on the good news side, we've got my site working again
with Archive and Recent video plugins. Details will follow, but the videopress plugins are working with the latest WordPress.

I'd like to have my most recent post on the main page.
Below that I would like to have videoarchive showing small thumbs of
my most recent videos.
BUT... videoarchive produces a page with X number of posts, positioned
one row after the other.
I'd like to only show my thumbnails (videopress option), but I would
like the layout to be a grid of say 4 across x 5 rows, my last 20
videos.
Is there a way (thinking PHP) to force the output of videoarchive
(which is one page 1 column across by 20 rows) to be 4 columns across
and 5 rows long?
_________
| |

I am about to launch and ambitious project that is uses both the internet (IE: web site) and, a hard copy magazine that will eventually be sold in stores.
As a hard copy publisher for nearly 20 years now, I've come to the realization that no magazine can stand alone without a website. And given the saturation levels of internet users in the US and in many other countries, having a web pressence is crucial.

The project will utilize both hard copy and internet.
Though as a publisher in hard copy, I haven't got the skills necessary to make certain web site configurations/modifications, and am asking for your help with this.
While the budget is small at this time, those programmers who show an understanding of the projects mission and goals, and can help produce an internet presence that exemplifies those goals will be compensated accordingly, AND those persons will earn nominal shares in the enterprise.

This is a 'fun project' for sure. Also, it will attempt to fill a huge hole in the marketplace by providing a particular service that no one else is providing right now, especially at the scope that this project looks to exploit.

The be more specific, the project will employ video on the web site.
Are there any knowledgeble hobbiests out there that would like to take a chance and contribute on an adventure that I believe is something that has every bit the chance on becoming the next media superstar, unlike anything already out there.

For more info please query me at WallySilvia@yahoo.com. Or simply give ma jingle @ 508-837-0847

The nice thing about JW and Flowplayers is that they are opensource and free to use in a non-commercial setting. The Moyea player is proprietary, starts at $50 and comes as an .exe file (?) so you need Windows to even set it up.

Wordpress isn't really suited for this kind of thing. You probably want to do it with Drupal.

HOW did I not know about your setup wizard!? I'm looking forward to trying it out!

I think you're right about just killing off the sidebars for the main page. In my case, I was planning on leaving them in, but manipulating the layout with CSS so they don't *look* like sidebars. For one, they'd be below the main content where the featured video slider is. I also want them to look much less boxy, an organic looking layout. I feel like I can achieve it if I can just get some really focused time to devote. If I make a mockup image, I'll post it here.

I'm definitely excited to see your mockup, Krystian. And thanks for the advice on setting up a background for the player. I hadn't thought of just attaching it to the containing <div> ... duhhh.

My skype username is "hummingcrow" so add me to your friends list & I'll look for you next time I have the opportunity!

Hello,

@Cheryl i really like your ideas on the 3 sections dedicated to the homepage, particularly the idea of having 1 blog that handles both video pages and written pages as i too would like to write posts with some maybe lesser videos i've done that i don't want to be downloaded by my itunes subscribers etc.... Also the idea of breaking out of that 'blog' look, i'm now thinking of ditching the sidebars for all the pages except for the written (blog) pages, but have all the stuff we would usually want in the sidebar cleverly fitted into the homepages i.e archives, categories feed buttons etc...

I'll mock up a design soon to give you a visual representation of what i have in my head, because i don't think it'll come through in writing.

That photobus site has the same video set-up as on my site, the only exceptions are i wanted my videos to auto-play thinking if someone comes onto my index page and clicks to watch a video, the minimal amount of clicks to do so the more likely they are to click to view more. Also the image in the player is there by default, i took it out for personal preference because i already had the still frame in view from the text part of the post. The shadow behind the player is just a matter of sticking a jpg in the div that houses the jw player, so nothing really complicated to overcome there.

You can create whatever player you want here and simply update the default code i do with little variables on the end: http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player-setup-wizard

@Heath,I like that flickout site, looks alot like David Howell's, but i want to try and do something a bit different, hope it turns out good, as i'd love for people to end up using it. Yeah i'm in the uk at the moment, so add me to skype whenever you want i'm usually online.

If you go down to 990px wide, there will be no sideways scroll for users with screen resolution set to 1024x768 using IE. If you care about that sort of thing.

I'd be up for going back & forth on Skype during spring break - I have some free time during 3/16 to 3/18.

I'd like to see a near-blank canvas to build upon, but that's well thought out for how people could customize it.

For example: I've just spent a bunch of time teaching my web design class about CSS by having them edit the CSS for their Ning profile. Ning's layouts are pretty slick in this regard. Most have anywhere from 1-3 background images users can replace via interface. Any others have to be hunted down with Firebug and hosted elsewhere, or uploaded to Ning in a discussion thread and then the image link would have to be harvested from there.

Anyway, the gist is, all their header background images are 955px wide, set to no-repeat. Most profile pages have a background image for the body element that's set to repeat-x. Some also have a main-content background image set to repeat-y. Maybe a similar set-up and some documentation included with the theme would give enough customization options, but strike a balance where you're not trying to allow each user to completely alter the entire layout.

Featured content slider sounds awesome!

I'm still looking for a theme whose index page is set to use 3 loops. One to prominently feature the latest video from a "featured" category - this is where I'd include the featured content slider. But I'd like another loop to include the latest video (or maybe latest 3) from a category of less important videos, like the random, daily-life ones. Videos that I want people to know are around, but that I don't want knocking my latest "featured" video out of center stage. I'd like a third loop that pulls up the latest 1-3 posts from another category - one for text and photo posts (posts that do not contain video).

I'm still wanting a layout that breaks the boxy, bloggy look as well. But that's hard to fit into WordPress' standard output of a main content area, a side bar, header and footer. And everyone would want to do it differently.

These are just ideas for a personal vlog. I don't know if they'd suit every vlogger or your purposes. But I'm throwing them out there for contemplation.

Oh, and there's more!

I really dig the video presentation over at Photobus http://www.photobus.co.uk/

Hover over the video, you get its controls. Take the mouse away, you’re looking at a picture, only it has a play button to indicate you can play it. The video space looks custom skinned in a way, at least with the video player having its own drop shadow. I’m pretty sure this is accomplished via the JW FLV Media Player – the new 4.3 version has features I want and will let users skin & control the appearance of the player – but I still need to learn how (frown). When played through to the end, the video doesn't sit on a black frame, it returns to the poster image for the video. I want that.

Hi all,
We've just released a new version of our video plugin for WordPress. Besides fixing some bugs, we have increased the default quality for all videos that are uploaded using Kaltura, and also added a cool feature that allows bloggers to capture their favorite frame as the video’s thumbnail.
You are welcome to download it here:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-video-pack/

Ok some of you may know that i'm making a new video theme for wordpress somewhat based on the design at kmogvideo.net . Well if you're interested in possibly using this theme when it's done, or you're just really cool and would like to make it as good as it can be here's the place to suggest design you like, features you'd like, all that kind of stuff, links to other site's that are doing it right it's all good!

Right now i'm thinking a 1000px wide, two sidebars, featured content slider and a image neutral/pastel colours.

Do you want a fully designed site where there's strong imagery where you'd just change the site's title, or would you rather something more basic that's a near blank canvas for you to build upon?

also if you want to really elaborate back and forth add me on skype- kmogvideo or aim- krystianmorgan

hopefully the third time is the charm trying to post this thread.

Thanks Cheryl.
i'll try over at the vPIP site.
i'm not sure if the problem has anything to do with vPIP or not either. The feeds were coming up the same when i had the original source set to the blogs feeds as well and not the vPIP feed. Also, the default video is Quicktime and the feed is the Quicktime feed.

Have you asked over in the vPIP forum?

here > http://groups.google.com/group/vpip

If it's a problem with vPIP specifically, you can get vPIP support from the developer there, but not here.

I'm not sure why your videos aren't getting picked up by iTunes. Perhaps you could try putting the QuickTime link first? iTunes might see the "flash" link and stop looking for other formats. I know on my own site, when I publish more than one version of a video, iTunes takes the first one I link to.

I note your videos don't show in your normal wordpress feed either, so it might be something to do with your installation of wordpress itself.

Wish I could help, but I have no idea what's going on there.

I've seen similar issues in other threads but i can't get any of the suggestions to work for me yet.
I just recently moved my blog from blogger to wordpress. I actually never did very much to make sure my feeds where very good when i was on blogger but now I'm trying to be "serious"
I have the vPIP QT feed plugged into feedburner's original source. My feeds only come up as the post titles in my reader and itunes can't seem to recognize the videos at all.
I have reading settings set to Full Text
I have SmartFeed and SmartCast turned on
here's the feed
http://feeds2.feedburner.com/ShadowWorld

Adobe's Onlocation software's purpose is to enable recording direct to a hard drive. It provides waveform monitors, camera and field monitor calibration, vector scope and vectra analysis, audio spectra analysis, etc. You can tweak your camera, lighting, etc. to record very nice quality video direct to a hard drive. I have recorded up to an hour of video direct to a hard drive without a problem. Typically I use an external usb hard drive. It saves a lot of time and the quality is good.
I expected Apple to have something just as good. The salesman, of course, told me it was included in FCP. NOT. So far I have recorded with ichat and imovie to the hard drive. The only way I can see to record to FCP is to tell FCP it is getting data from a tape in the camera when it is actually just getting raw video. This is not what I expected.
For now my flow is to set up with my windows computer using Onlocation and then record to imovie using that setup. I was hoping someone had a better system.

Hi there. I'm finally transferring my Shadow World blog onto a wordpress site and i'm using the spacy theme. One thing that I would really like is a navigation button at the bottom of the screen to encourage people to keep watching. Right now the "older posts" link is right under the header and it would be easily missed if someone gets to the bottom of the page.
any ideas how to move or duplicate that on the bottom of the page?

Hi, I'm a Final Cut user and I'm not sure if this has been solved or not, but you can record video directly into Final Cut, though I wouldn't do it often.

You still need to have a camera connected to your computer, but instead of recording to the tape, you can bring it in to your hard drive from FCP. I can't really vouch for the quality of it, but for short clips I think you'd be fine.

I just signed in to the admin section of the forum. We've got over 1800 users, most of them are probably spam accounts. I was surprised to see that there is no way to bulk-edit or bulk-delete users. To get rid of the spammers we have to delete them one at a time.

I scanned the list of available bbpress plugins and didn't see one that would let you bulk-delete. So I'd say that alone is reason to look for a different forum solution other than bbpress. I know I don't have time to delete that many users one at a time. Ugh.

So, other than this RSSFWD problem, is bbPress a good way to go for adding forums?

I look forward to learning more about what you all do at that "hackathon."

Yeah, RSSFWD went down and doesn't seem to be coming back up. We need to probably update and clean up this forum. We haven't done any admin work since we set it up last year. I wonder if bbPress has improved since then.

We have a hackathon happening next month, so maybe we can juggle it then unless someone wants access to it now.

For instance, I'd love to be able to see what posts are new since I last logged in.
